Watch this youtube video of a lightning strike.   This video shows the most common form of lightning with a negative cloud base and step leaders moving down.  The large return stroke rapidly heats the air and creates the thunder.  Notice the return stroke persists for the duration of this video (less than 0.1 seconds)

Much rarer is upward lightning.  This video on upward lightning is worth watching.  Upward lightning is when the ground or tall structure is negatively charged and the cloud base is positively charged.

This youtube video discussing lightning rods is short but informative.

8.7 Exam #3 will be available for 6 days at the end of week 8, from Friday June 2 through Wed June 7.  It will cover content from weeks 7 and 8 only.

Don't forget that the case study presentation is due 1 hr before our last face to face meeting next week.  Please upload it on Canvas or e-mail it to me before last lab meeting (June 12), this will allow me to get everything set.

Extra credit ideas: 

1) use the severe storm data site to explore your own questions.  The idea here is to extend what we did in lab if you have some good ideas.

2) write a 2 page summary highlighting some of the more interesting aspects of Hurricane Sandy.

3.   Write a short summary (2 pages double space of the 2011 tornado season.  You could summarize the whole season or focus on a particular event.

 

4.work through the pdf file slide show (1974 vs 2011 tornado outbreak).  Answer the related questions.
